Five Element Relationships

Five Element Cycles

Nourishing Cycle (Outer circle): Mother → Child (also called Sheng cycle)
Control Cycle (Inner star): Grandmother → Grandchild (also called Ke cycle)

🡑 Jeong Gyeok (Strengthening)

Principle: "When empty, tonify the Mother"

Point Selection (4 points):

To be tonified:

  • The mother element point on the affected channel
  • The mother element point on the mother channel

To be sedated:

  • The grandmother element point on the affected channel
  • The grandmother element point on the grandmother channel

Example: Lung Jeong Gyeok
The Lung channel belongs to the Metal element:
• Mother of Metal (produces Metal) is Earth
• Grandmother of Metal (restrains Metal) is Fire

Therefore, to strengthen the Metal element (Lung), we tonify Earth and sedate Fire:

  1. Tonify Earth point (Mother Element) on the Lung (Self) = LU-9
  2. Tonify Earth point (Mother Element) on the Spleen (Mother Channel, Earth) = SP-3
  3. Sedate Fire point (Grandmother Element) on the Lung (Self) = LU-10
  4. Sedate Fire point (Grandmother Element) on the Heart (Grandmother Channel, Fire) = HT-8

The final combination for Lung JG is: SP-3(+) LU-9(+) HT-8(-) LU-10(-)

Modifications

Target Channel: Adds contralateral points applying Jeong Gyeok action to chosen channel.
Example: Apply SI dynamic movement quality to BL channel

Add Quality: Applies quality of chosen channel to the Jeong Gyeok treatment.
Example: Add TB expansiveness quality to GB channel

🡓 Seung Gyeok (Sedating)

Principle: "When full, sedate the Son"

Point Selection (4 points):

To be tonified:

  • The grandmother element point on the affected channel
  • The grandmother element point on the grandmother channel

To be sedated:

  • The child element point on the affected channel
  • The child element point on the child channel

Example: Gallbladder Seung Gyeok
The Gallbladder channel belongs to the Wood element:
• Grandmother of Wood (Controls Wood) is Metal
• Child of Wood (Wood produces) is Fire

Therefore, to reduce the Wood element (Gallbladder), we tonify Metal and sedate Fire:

  1. Tonify Metal point (Grandmother Element) on the Gallbladder (Self) = GB-44
  2. Tonify Metal point (Grandmother Element) on the Large Intestine (Grandmother Channel, Metal) = LI-1
  3. Sedate Fire point (Child Element) on the Gallbladder (Self) = GB-38
  4. Sedate Fire point (Child Element) on the Small Intestine (Child Channel, Fire) = SI-5

The final combination for Gallbladder SG is: GB-44(+) LI-1(+) GB-38(-) SI-5(-)

❄ Han Gyeok (Cooling)

Method 1 (Simple)
  • Tonify: Water point + Water of Water (KD-10 for Yin, BL-66 for Yang)
  • Sedate: Fire point + Fire of Fire (HT-8 for Yin, SI-5 for Yang)
Method 2 (Complex)
  • Tonify: Water of Target + Water of Controlling channel
  • Sedate: Fire of Target + Fire of Child channel

🔥 Yeol Gyeok (Warming)

Method 1 (Simple)
  • Tonify: Fire point + Fire of Fire (HT-8 for Yin, SI-5 for Yang)
  • Sedate: Water point + Water of Water (KD-10 for Yin, BL-66 for Yang)
Method 2 (Complex)
  • Tonify: Fire of Target + Fire of Mother channel
  • Sedate: Water of Target + Water of Controlling channel
